Excavation and Fill Dirt Services in Lakeland, FL
Low lot, footings to dig or a utility trench to run? DBR Construction handles excavation, fill dirt and compaction for homes and commercial sites throughout Polk County, with a licensed builder overseeing the work.
When a Site Needs Excavation, Fill or Both
Excavation is digging out soil to make room for footings, utility lines, drainage structures or a stem wall. Fill is the opposite: bringing in clean soil to raise a lot, build up a pad or level out low spots. Many Polk County sites need both. Our flat terrain and high seasonal water table mean a lot of homesites have to be raised with fill to reach the finished floor elevation required by the county, the city or a flood zone.
Fill only works if it is the right material placed the right way. We use clean, compactable fill without roots, muck or construction debris, spread it in lifts and compact each one so the pad does not settle under the slab. On the excavation side, we call in utility locates before we dig and work to the depths and dimensions on your plans.

Clean fill hauled in and placed to raise low lots and bring the building pad up to the required finished floor elevation.
Compaction & Density Testing
Fill placed in lifts and compacted, with density testing coordinated so the pad is ready to pass inspection.
Backfill & Final Grade
Backfilling around foundations and utilities, then shaping the final grade so water drains away from the structure.
Clearing Before We Dig
Wooded or overgrown site? We clear it before we dig, so one crew handles your site from the first tree to the finished pad.
Common Excavation & Fill Questions
Most Polk County building lots need fill to reach the finished floor elevation set by the county, the city or a FEMA flood zone, and to make sure water drains away from the house instead of toward it. Low or flat lots and lots near lakes and wetlands usually need the most.
We use clean, compactable fill that is free of roots, muck, trash and construction debris. The exact material is matched to the job and to any specifications from your engineer or the soil report, because the wrong fill can hold water or keep settling for years.
Fill is spread in thin layers called lifts and compacted one layer at a time with the right equipment. When the project requires it, a testing lab checks the density before the next lift goes down, so the finished pad can carry the slab without settling.
Yes. Florida law requires a call to Sunshine 811 before excavating so buried utility lines can be marked. We place that request before every dig and work carefully around marked lines.
Fill cost depends mostly on how many cubic yards the site needs, the type of material, haul distance and how much compaction and testing the job requires. We measure the site, figure the volume and give you a written price before any trucks show up.
Yes. Excavating for an addition, ADU or detached garage on an occupied property takes more care than an open lot. We plan equipment access, protect driveways, landscaping and existing utilities, and keep the work area clean and safe for your family.
Settlement cracks in a slab almost always trace back to the dirt underneath it. We place fill in controlled lifts, compact each one and confirm elevations before forms go down, the same way we do on our own builds. That is how a foundation stays level through Florida's wet seasons.
